Our approach is centred on the six nurturing principles.

  1. Children's learning is understood developmentally
  2. The classroom offers a safe base
  3. The importance of nurture for the development of wellbeing
  4. Language is a vital means of communication
  5. All behaviour is communication
  6. The importance of transition in children's lives

At the heart of this are strong and trusting relationships. Our practice is based around communication and to make certain we have a two- way communication channel between us, the young person and their family, we allocate a Key Teacher to all our young people.

The Key Teacher plays a pivotal role in the transition of the young person to and from our service. It provides the young person with somebody in our service who they speak to and express their emotions and needs.

In addition, our Key Teacher is point of contact for families to share information and receive feedback.

Our partnerships with our mainstream schools and other services are instrumental in the targeted support we offer. Our Key Teachers are a link to incorporating their expertise into our service. We pride ourselves on the partnerships we have created and use. The support they offer is critical in the assistance we provide for our young people and their family.

Our key teachers work with our young people daily. We have a soft start each morning and after lunch. Our key teacher meets with the young person to ensure they are emotionally ready to start lessons. On a Friday each week we dedicate a period for our key teacher and young person to reflect and review the week. The principles behind this practice is to provide the young person, with support, to identify situations and the use of specific skills that enabled them to function within a successful task and to pinpoint areas that require further development. This information is incorporated into future planning to provide the young person with the knowledge of key skills and successful approaches, to boost their confidence and build resilience.
